Gendoping, waarbij een gen wordt toegediend dat zelfstandig aan het werk gaat in het lichaam, heeft sciencefiction-achtige kanten. ‘Elke vorm van doping kent risico’s’, zegt Herman Ram, directeur van de Nederlandse Dopingautoriteit. ‘Maar het risico bij gendoping is het grootst. De dosering is moeilijk beheersbaar. Er zit geen uitknop op.’

A demonstration of the TissueFAXS system from TissueGnostics will take place next week from Tuesday October 21 till Thursday October 23 within the UMCG Microscopy and Imaging Center. The TissueFAXS system is an instrument of analysis that combines detailed morphologic information offered by microscopy with the scientific accuracy of multi-channel flow cytometry. The system can be used to analyze protein expression levels in tissue sections and cell smears at the single cell level comparable to flow cytometry. The system allows analysis of cells/sections stained by both conventional transmission light microscopy and multi-channel fluorescence microscopy.

Veni, Vidi, Vici: hogere bedragen, ruimer voor hoogleraren, minder papierwerk vooraf

NWO past de subsidies Veni, Vidi en Vici aan. Er komt meer geld voor excellente onderzoekers. De subsidies worden hoger, indienmogelijkheden voor hoogleraren zijn ruimer en er is minder papierwerk vooraf. Ook is er aandacht voor kennisbenutting, komen er meer mogelijkheden voor multidisciplinaire voorstellen en worden voorstellen uit verschillende gebieden met elkaar vergeleken. De veranderingen worden doorgevoerd naar aanleiding van een evaluatie over de afgelopen jaren. In november en december organiseert NWO voor onderzoekers een aantal voorlichtingsbijeenkomsten over de wijzigingen.

The Scientific Programme Indonesia – Netherlands (SPIN) is a programme for bilateral scientific research cooperation between Indonesia and the Netherlands, executed by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), which has been running successfully since 2000. The aim of SPIN is to stimulate and fund long-term scientific cooperation between researchers and research consortia from Indonesia and the Netherlands, through integrated bilateral research programmes and supporting activities, based on the principles of reciprocity and mutual benefit, granting Netherlands’ and Indonesian researchers access to scientific resources and research areas.

For the period 2005 – 2011, the KNAW launched a new SPIN subsidy instrument for post-doctoral research in Indonesia to stimulate young talented Indonesian PhDs to develop further as researchers and to improve the scientific environment in Indonesia.

The KNAW invites Indonesian and Netherlands researchers to submit proposals for the fourth round of the SPIN Postdoc Programme.

Het Mandema-stipendium is een persoonsgebonden financiering (€60.000,-), die jonge, recent-gepromoveerde talentvolle arts-onderzoekers financiële ondersteuning biedt bij hun intentie de opleiding tot medisch specialist te combineren met het uitvoeren van wetenschappelijk onderzoek (opbouwen van een eigen onderzoekslijn). Kandidaten hebben de ambitie en kwaliteiten om door te stromen in een academische toppositie binnen een universitair medisch centrum, bij voorkeur het UMCG.

Wat biedt het Mandema-stipendium?
Het Mandema-stipendium is opgebouwd uit een gecombineerd traject van de medische specialisatie en (medisch-)wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Het traject kan – na het eerste jaar dat volledig besteed moet worden aan de specialisatie - op diverse manieren worden ingevuld en kenmerkt zich door een grote flexibiliteit.

Oorzaak Parkinson-achtige ziekte nader in kaart gebracht
In het Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen (UMCG) is een belangrijke stap gezet in het onderzoek naar neurodegeneratieve ziekten zoals Alzheimer en Parkinson. Een team van de afdeling Celbiologie ontdekte dat een gebrek aan co-enzym A leidt tot DNA-schade, en daarmee tot het ontstaan van hersenbeschadigingen. Het onderzoek levert met name belangrijke nieuwe inzichten in het ontstaan van PKAN, een ziekte die tot ernstige hersenbeschadigingen bij jonge kinderen leidt. De resultaten worden binnenkort gepubliceerd in het vooraanstaande blad Human Molecular Genetics.

Een onderzoeksgroep onder leiding van dr. Ody Sibon (NNOC - Northern Netherlands Oncology Center) ontdekte dat het DNA-herstelmechanisme is aangetast, waneer de co-enzym A biosynthese route niet werkt. Sibon: “Het was nog nooit aangetoond dat co-enzym A nodig is om het DNA te beschermen. Daarom is dit een doorbraak in het onderzoek.”

Het verwijderen van stolsel bij een acuut hartinfarct leidt tot een betere 1-jaars prognose. Dit blijkt uit vervolgonderzoek naar de klinische effecten van trombus aspiratie door de afdelingen Cardiologie en Pathologie van het Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen (UMCG). Zij publiceren daarover deze week in het gerenommeerde medisch tijdschrift The Lancet.
Cardiologen en pathologen van het UMCG hebben ruim twee jaar lang onderzoek gedaan naar de vraag of het verwijderen van stolsel met een thrombus-aspiratie katheter tot minder hartschade leidt. Bij thrombus aspiratie wordt geprobeerd stolsel dat bij een acuut hartinfarct in het kransslagvat ontstaat door een dun slangetje weg te zuigen. In het onderzoek werd het effect van trombus aspiratie op de bloeddoorstroming bij 1071 patiënten met een acuut hartinfarct onderzocht.

Het Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen (UMCG) krijgt vijf miljoen euro subsidie van de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO). Met dit geld gaat het UMCG een DNA-biobank opzetten voor onder andere LifeLines. Dit is een grootschalig onderzoek naar de factoren die invloed hebben op het ontstaan van veelvoorkomende chronische aandoeningen. In de biobank wordt lichaamsmateriaal, zoals urine en bloed, van deelnemers aan dit onderzoek opgeslagen. Hieruit wordt onder meer DNA geïsoleerd en geanalyseerd. Deze ultramoderne faciliteit maakt het mogelijk om efficiënt en effectief erfelijke aspecten van chronische aandoeningen te kunnen onderzoeken. (GIKD - Groningen Institute for Kidney Diseases)

De Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) heeft 48 laatstejaars studenten en recent afgestudeerden van twaalf universiteiten een Toptalent-subsidie toegekend. Met deze subsidie kunnen de aanstaande wetenschappers hun eigen creatieve onderzoeksideeën vormgeven in een vierjarig promotieonderzoek. De subsidie bedraagt maximaal 180.000 euro. Het onderzoek zal worden uitevoerd in de groep van prof. G. de Haan (NNOC - Northern Netherlands Oncology Center).

Het project : Functional analysis of a novel gene inducing hematopoietic stem cell expansion E. (Evgenia) Verovskaya BSc (v) Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen A novel protein-encoding gene involved in turnover of hematopoietic stem cells was recently identified. Preliminary experiments have shown that this gene is able to perturb the process of blood formation. In the course of the project functions of encoded protein as well as its role in development of human leukemia will be investigated. This project will be the first study to characterize the functions of protein localized in endoplasmatic reticulum involved in hematopoietic stem cell turnover.

Vandaag is Liesbeth de Vries (NNOC - Northern Netherlands Oncology Center), hoogleraar Medische Oncologie en hoofd van de afdeling Medische Oncologie van het Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen (UMCG), benoemd tot Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw. Zij ontving deze hoge onderscheiding op grond van haar grote wetenschappelijke verdiensten. Zij heeft jarenlang onderzoek gedaan naar het gevoeliger maken van tumoren voor medicijnen. Op dit terrein geldt zij ook internationaal als een van de meest vooraanstaande onderzoekers. De officiële uitreiking vond plaats in het stadhuis van Groningen door de heer Wallage, burgemeester van de gemeente Groningen.

"Stap over je schroom heen als je uitgenodigd wordt door LifeLines en doe het"
De 56-jarige Han Palmen uit Sneek hoorde eind 2006 in eerste instantie via het ‘Sneker Nieuwsblad’ over het LifeLines-onderzoek. Korte tijd later kwam het verzoek van zijn huisarts om mee te doen aan dit grote onderzoek onder de bevolking van Noord-Nederland. “Ik heb mij opgegeven, omdat ik het wel interessant vond. Ook om antwoord te krijgen op de vraag of je gezond bent of dat er iets aan de hand is. Het krijgen van die bevestiging sprak mezelf het meeste aan. Ik ben de afgelopen twintig jaar nooit bij een arts geweest. Nou daar is de afgelopen periode de nodige verandering in gekomen.”  De eerste resultaten van het bloedonderzoek wezen uit dat Palmen, zonder dat hij dit vermoedde, een ernstige vorm van nierfalen heeft en op termijn een niertransplantatie zal moeten ondergaan. Euro 150 million funding allocated
CTMM, the Center for Translational Molecular Medicine, announced April 1, 2008 that nine projects will receive research funding amounting to a total of 150 million Euro. Dutch university medical centers, a broad spectrum of small and medium-sized enterprises, major industry leaders including Philips and Organon (a part of Schering- Plough), and the Dutch Government are involved.
A total of 150 million Euro will be injected into Netherlandsbased research related to the most prevalent diseases in the cardiovascular area, cancer and neurodegeneration (Alzheimer
disease). These three areas of disease have the biggest impact on people throughout the western world. The funding is provided by the Dutch government, industry and academia. The research is focused firmly on the ‘translational’ aspects of molecular medicine so that results can be applied as

Ernstige bloedingen bij zuigelingen met de leverziekte galgangsatresie zouden zijn te voorkomen als in Nederland op een andere manier vitamine K wordt toegediend als baby’s borstvoeding krijgen. In Denemarken, waar dit nu al op een ander manier gebeurt, komen de bloedingen tien keer zo weinig voor. Dit blijkt uit onderzoek van kinderartsen Peter van Hasselt van het UMCU en Henkjan Verkade (CLDS - Center for Liver, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases) van het UMCG. De uitkomsten van zijn onderzoek worden vandaag gepubliceerd in het gerenommeerde vakblad Pediatrics. Op dit moment wordt bekeken of in Nederland ook een ander systeem ingevoerd moet worden.

Onderzoeker Berber Vlieg-Boerstra (GRIAC - Groningen Research Institute for Asthma and COPD) heeft de bestaande allergietest verbetert. 500 kinderen die aan een allergie leden werden opnieuw aan de allergietest onderworpen. De uitslag was voor veel kinderen goed nieuws; de helft had ineens helemaal geen allergie meer. Ze waren er overheen gegroeid of artsen hadden een verkeerde diagnose gesteld. Vermoed wordt dat veel kinderen geheel ten onrecht op een streng dieet leven.

From 8 to 20 March 2008, a delegation of the University of Groningen visited some of the most important Latin American universities, including the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM; Mexico City), the Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP; Brazil), the Universidade de São Paulo (USP; Brazil) and the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP; Brazil) and the Universidad de Buenos Aires in Argentina. The delegation, led by Rector Magnificus Frans Zwarts, consisted of twelve members including the Deans of the largest faculties of the University of Groningen, but especially the Medical faculty was active being represented by Rient Huizenga who explored the possibilities for electives in the Groningen medical curriculum, but especially by the GUIDE investigators Dick Hoekstra (CLDS - Center for Liver, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases) and Maikel Peppelenbosch (TRIO - Institute for Tranplantation, Immunology and Inflammation), who solidified and took steps to significantly expand the already existing substantial scientific collaboration with this dynamic emerging part of the world. The University reconfirmed its existing collaboration with UNAM, and novel agreements were signed with UNIFESP, UNICAMP, and USP. Within GUIDE already collaborative PhD programmes with these Latin American universities exist, but the number of these programmes is now expected to increase substantially, in addition to other collaborative research activities. This high profile activity of the RUG/UMCG has not gone unnoticed by the Latin American press, as is for instance evident from this interview with Maikel Peppelenbosch, thus hopes are high that Groningen may emerge as the hub for Latin Americans scientists interested in drug exploration within Europe.

Studium Generale organises two evenings with lectures on the search of drugs. Monday March 31, Professor Ben Westerink (S&A - Synthesis and Analysis) and Professor Jan Wilschut (TRIO - Institute for Tranplantation, Immunology and Inflammation) will speak about the process of finding drugs for Parkinson disease and Aids (Dutch spoken). Monday April 7, there is a debate about cholesterol lowering drugs and the prescription of statins, with the researchers Uffe Ravnskov en Peter Lansberg (English spoken). The lectures are in the Academic Building, Broerstraat 5, 8-10 P.M.

Huisartsen moeten worden betrokken bij de zorg op lange termijn voor volwassenen die als kind kanker hebben overleefd. Dit blijkt uit een gezamenlijk onderzoek van de afdelingen kinderoncologie en huisartsgeneeskunde van het Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen. Onderzoekers van het Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen hebben in de ziekte coeliakie maar liefst zeven nieuwe genen geïdentificeerd. De gevonden genen zijn waarschijnlijk allemaal betrokken bij de ontstekingsreacties die in de darm ontstaan na het eten van voedsel dat gluten bevat. De onderzoekers onder leiding van hoogleraar Genetica Cisca Wijmenga (CLDS - Center for Liver, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases) publiceren vandaag over hun onderzoek in het gerenommeerde wetenschapsblad Nature Genetics.

Van 13 tot en met 16 mei 2008 wordt 100 jaar farmacologie in Nederland gevierd. In die week wordt een scala van evenementen georganiseerd. Er zal een publiekssymposium over geneesmiddelen worden gehouden alsmede een wetenschappelijk symposium met als thema 'De farmacologie in Nederland: heden en toekomst'. Tevens worden er in de verschillende universiteitssteden activiteiten ontplooid die te maken hebben met farmacologie. Nederlandse onderzoekers op weg naar antwoord op ongeneeslijke longziekte
Nederland onderzoekt op een wereldwijd unieke wijze de chronische longaandoening COPD. Topinstituut Pharma heeft internationaal bekende specialisten in longziekten, voeding, genetica en farmacie bijeengebracht. Via twee onderzoeksprojecten zijn zij met elkaar op zoek naar verlichting. Door te concentreren op enerzijds het stadium vóór de zichtbare intrede van de ziekte, en anderzijds de fase waarin de ziekte al vergevorderd is, worden resultaten verwacht die leiden tot een betere diagnose, behandeling en wellicht zelfs genezing. Bijna vijftig procent van de kinderen die een dubbelblinde allergietest doet in de voedselprovocatie-unit, blijkt geen voedselallergie te hebben. Dit blijkt uit promotie-onderzoek naar de werking van deze test van diëtist Berber Vlieg (GRIAC - Groningen Research Institute for Asthma and COPD) van het Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen. Deze test geldt als de beste voor het vaststellen van een voedselallergie. In haar onderzoek ontwikkelde zij een standaard voor een goed, veilig en betrouwbaar testprotocol, zodat deze test ook buiten de gespecialiseerde centra uitgevoerd kan worden. Het verwijderen van het stolsel bij een acuut hartinfarct is zinvol. Dat blijkt uit een groot onderzoek van de afdelingen Cardiologie en Pathologie van het Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen. Zij publiceren daarover deze week in het gerenommeerde New England Journal of Medicine. Het Groningse onderzoek is (ook internationaal gezien) de grootste studie ooit naar thrombus aspiratie. Onderzoek naar en registratie van geneesmiddelen vindt vrijwel altijd alleen voor volwassenen plaats. Maar ook kinderen kunnen niet zonder medicijnen. Bepaling van een veilige en werkzame dosis is nog steeds te veel nattevingerwerk. “Er moet meer onderzoek naar het geneesmiddelgebruik van kinderen komen,” vindt farmaco-epidemiologe prof. Lolkje de Jong-van den Berg (PEDP - PharmacoEpidemiology and Drug Policy). “Maar je moet wel goed weten waar de problemen liggen.”

UMCG landelijk expertisecentrum voor pulmonale hypertensie
Pulmonale hypertensie is een ernstige ziekte met een slechte prognose. De aandoening is zeldzaam. In het landelijk expertisecentrum voor deze ziekte in het UMCG ziet men jaarlijks zo’n 50 patiënten. Aanvankelijk was er alleen een effectief medicijn dat continu in een bloedvat moet worden toegediend, maar sinds kort zijn er ook medicijnen die als pil kunnen worden ingenomen. Voor ouders is een kind met pulmonale hypertensie een voortdurend bron van grote zorg.
Pulmonale hypertensie (PH) is heel zeldzaam, zegt kindercardioloog prof. Rolf Berger (CVC - Cardiovascular Center). “Jaarlijks behandelen we zo’n 50 kinderen, uit heel Nederland.”

Leren leven met allergie
Wie een kind met voedselallergie heeft, moet opletten. Etiketten lezen op voedselverpakkingen, andere mensen inlichten, je kind bewustmaken. Dat kan alleen als ouders precies weten wat er aan de hand is. “Ouders zijn een stuk geholpen bij een juiste diagnose”, zegt Ewoud Dubois (GRIAC - Groningen Research Institute for Asthma and COPD), hoogleraar Kinderallergologie in het UMCG. “Op basis daarvan kunnen wij goede instructies geven. Dat maakt hun een stuk weerbaarder.”

Driehonderd levertransplantaties bij kinderen
Het UMCG is het enige centrum in Nederland dat levertransplantaties bij kinderen uitvoert. De eerste vond plaats in 1982 en na een voorzichtig begin worden er nu jaarlijks tien tot vijftien uitgevoerd. Sinds ongeveer drie jaar worden ook ‘living related’ transplantaties uitgevoerd, waarbij één van de ouders donor is. “De resultaten mogen er zijn”, zegt transplantatiechirurg prof. Robert Porte (TRIO - Institute for Tranplantation, Immunology and Inflammation). “Met ons goed ingewerkte team kunnen we ons met de beste van de wereld meten.”

Het UMCG start een internationaal topinstituut op het gebied van gezond ouder worden. In dit topinstituut wordt alle kennis over gezond zijn èn blijven, verkregen uit onderzoek, gebundeld. Dat kondigde bestuursvoorzitter Bert Bruggeman aan in zijn nieuwjaarstoespraak. Het topinstituut zal ongeveer 400 arbeidsplaatsen opleveren. Het UMCG verwacht het topinstituut binnen drie jaar te realiseren.

These courses are offered in English as well as in Dutch.

To convince yourselve whether these courses are useful for you, several presentations have been organized, at various locations, of how to format a thesis the easy (and reliable!) way using Word, and how to include accurate references in a flexible format. These demonstrations will be held in English, according to the scheme attached (see also http://www.rug.nl/cit/aio):
